When Lynette Whittaker isn’t travelling to opulent villas across Africa, where she runs the show, she can be found heading a team of creatives in Mossel Bay to bring design and marketing solutions to her clients, including several in the family-run wine and spirits business. Her adulation of wine began in her 20s, and Lynette has a proclivity for bubbles and unique white cultivars that tantalise the palette. Along with her business partners, they sought to scour the thousands of wine grape farms around South Africa, to pick the elite, which resulted in our bottled wines, Süd, being launched in 2021. READ MORE Lynette and the team have a yearning to market lesser known, high-end wines from South Africa, not only to South Africans, but also to Mozambique, to which they are currently exporting. The aim is to expand to the rest of Africa, and long-term, to the US and Europe. As the wines are sourced from across South Africa’s wine regions, it is not tied to a specific cultivar or region. Süd (meaning “south”) was born to honour the country’s heritage. Our South African passports still state “Republique D’Afrique Du Sud” dating back to our European legacy. Having worked on wine label and packaging design, as well as the marketing side of the beverage industry, Lynette identified a gap in the geographical areas recognised by South Africa’s Wine and Spirit Board. She realised that there was a need to establish the Garden Route District as a recognised wine region. In 2018, the Garden Route District changed its name to the Eden District, at which point she began the process of establishing the Eden Wine Route, a non-profit company aimed at promoting the area as a wine destination. In 2020, with Lynette at the helm, we established Eden Wines. Eden Wines aims to re-affirm South Africa as one of the top wine-producing countries in the world. Our mission is to put the Cape Southeastern Coast on the map for producing top-class wines, deserving of its own dedicated region, and to take the Western Cape’s finest, lesser-known wines, to the rest of the world.
