Wishful drinking

Wine has been around for thousands of years. In fact, evidence of wine that was 8,000 years old was discovered, just a few years ago, in Georgia, Europe. South Africa, although a little later to the table, with the first vines being planted in the country in 1655 by Jan van Riebeeck, has been firmly rooted on the world wine map since the 17th century. There’s a reason wine has stood the test of time.

IT IS A SOCIAL DRINK

Yes, you can drink it alone, but many of us choose to rather share the moment with others. Perhaps over dinner with loved ones, or during a visit with friends. The socio-cultural benefits of wine are something that is not as easily achieved with some other alcohols. Indeed, when you are in an awkward social situation, wine gives you something to talk about, even if you’re seizing talking points from the label. Chatting about how well a wine pairs with your food is not uncommon within the connoisseur realm. This brings us to our next point.

WINE CAN ENHANCE A DISH

Most fine dining restaurants employ sommeliers, whose specific job function is to recommend wines that will pair well with select dishes from the menu. A sommelier is trained in the art of helping diners select wines that uplift the entire gastronomic affair. The flavours of the food that is consumed can be positively accentuated by the right wine, complementing the gustatory experience, and uplifting dishes to new levels.

PROVIDES RELIEF FROM STRESS

Most wine drinkers already know that a glass of wine in the evening can help you relax after a stressful day. If you take the time to relish a glass of delectable, good-quality wine, savouring every sip, it can help you reach a state of calm. Although it is not proven, it is worth bearing in mind that reportedly red wines will help you relax, while white wines can energise you.

WINE REALLY CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH

PROVEN TO HELP YOU LIVE LONGER

The polyphenols found in both red and white wine are plant compounds. They act as antioxidants and can help prevent cellular damage from free radicals, which impedes cell ageing. Polyphenols can also help defend against UV radiation and pathogens and everyone know that the sun’s rays age us dramatically. It probably comes as no surprise to read that one study found that middle-aged Italian men who drank one or two glasses of red wine every day tended to live longer than men who drank less (or more) alcohol.

WINE CAN HELP SAVE OCEAN ANIMALS

So there are lots of reasons to savour your wine tipple, content in the knowledge that not only is it benefitting you personally, but it is also helping ocean animals and indigent communities. We end with one of our favourite quotes, from Plato “No thing more excellent nor more valuable than wine was ever granted mankind by God.” Who are we to argue with this inspirational Greek philosopher?

Really? Not all wines, of course. Eden Wines partners with EARTH LEGACY FOUNDATION and we give a percentage of our profits to this worthy NPO. This means that when you buy one of the wines in our range, you are benefitting marine life. EARTH LEGACY FOUNDATION PROJECTS focus on protecting imperilled marine species. The species that are central to the conservation organisation are turtles. Fire Island translates as ‘Ilha do Fogo’, which is an island off the coast of Mozambique. It was once destined to become a luxury resort. During their first visit, the new owners realised that critically endangered hawksbill turtles and endangered green turtles, which retreat to the island to nest, were being wiped out by poachers. They resolved to set up measures to protect turtles and all other biodiversities within the 150km stretch of reef off of the island.
